Washington State Board of Accountancy Continues as Stand-alone Agencyby Judy Love, WSCPA Director of Advocacy The bills to move the SBOA into the Department of Licensing (HB 2917/SB 6425), have died in their committees of origin. Representative Steve Conway, Chair of the House Commerce and Labor Committee and Senator Darlene Fairley, Chair of the Senate Operations & Elections Committee did not bring the bills to their committees for a vote, keeping their commitments to the many CPAs around the State who communicated their concerns and opposition to the proposal. In addition to hearing from CPAs and members of the public, legislators also learned of opposition from the AICPA, NASBA (National Association of State Boards of Accountancy). and a 2008 U.S. Treasury Report on the Auditing Profession http://treas.gov/offices/domestic-finance/acap/docs/final-report.pdf, all citing the reasons for state boards to remain independent. The WSCPA is pleased the SBOA will remain an independent agency with highly skilled Board members and staff who understand how to deal with an increasing degree of complexity and layers of regulation.
