UPS, WSCPA: Partners in Sustainability

UPS pursues sustainable business practices worldwide through operational efficiency, conservation initiatives and industry-leading innovations. Now UPS can help you do the same.

Network Efficiency — UPS addresses its carbon footprint on the ground and in the air.
UPS delivery vehicles are fueled by alternative fuel and rely on advanced technology to reduce scope 31 emissions.  In the air, UPS strives to minimize the carbon intensity of its air fleet. UPS aims to reduce its CO2 emissions per available ton mile (ATM) 20% by 2020.

Measurement — UPS can conduct a Carbon Footprint Analysis for your shipments based on a verified process.
Precision matters when mitigating your carbon footprint. No third party can maintain an accurate carbon neutral product without company-specific calculations based on an accurate company-wide carbon inventory. UPS Carbon Footprint Analysis is a proprietary system, for the modeling of emissions associated with UPS delivery services based on historical and projected data. It is verified by SGS, the world’s leading verification and certification company.

Because UPS quantifies its scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, it can more precisely capture the carbon emitted to move your shipments, giving you the confidence you want when reporting your own scope 3 emissions. UPS uses company-specific factoring for each mode of transport to ensure the right emissions calculations are attached to the right shipments. UPS conducts a true-up calculation with company inventory from the same year that the
shipment occurred to correct any difference between predicted and actual emissions.

Environmentally Preferable Shipping — Offset the climate impact of your UPS shipping.
UPS is the first major delivery company to offer a third-party-verified carbon neutral option for U.S. shipments. For shippers who select this service, UPS calculates carbon emissions for all carbon neutral shipments, then purchases and retires offsets equaling that amount. UPS is committed to purchasing only certified offsets [e.g., Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), Gold Standard, Climate Action Reserve]. The UPS process for carbon neutral shipping is certified by The CarbonNeutral Company, one of the world’s leading carbon offset and carbon management businesses, and the calculator for quantifying the emissions to offset is verified by SGS. UPS will match offset purchases up to $1 million through 2010.

Transparency — UPS reports on scope 3 emissions.
UPS’s reporting of scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions provides accurate and actionable results when measuring the scope 3 emissions from your “vendor supply chain and delivery services.” UPS is also involved with a number of environmental organizations that independently rate the transparency and comprehensiveness of carbon reporting. A member of the North America Dow Jones Sustainability Index since 2004, UPS was the only express delivery business in the S&P 500 named to the 2009 Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index.

Accountability — UPS participates in many U.S. Environmental Protection Agency programs.
UPS is a charter SmartWay member and has won excellence awards in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, UPS became the first global shipping, delivery and logistics company member of the EPA’s Climate Leaders program.

1   The Greenhouse Gas Protocol categorizes emissions into three scopes: Scope 1 is all direct greenhouse gas emissions. Scope 2 is indirect emissions from consumption of purchased electricity, heat or steam. Scope 3 is other indirect emissions, such as transport related activities in vehicles.
