Volunteer OpportunitiesAs a Washington Society member dedicated to volunteering in various communities throughout Washington, you are increasing the awareness of popular issues that are of importance to specific audiences – including students, investors, local nonprofits and the general public. You are not only a volunteer, but you are also an individual with a financial/accounting background. This extensive knowledge makes you a desirable volunteer for various organizations throughout Washington. The WSCPA encourages you to share your abilities and promote your profession by volunteering in an area that interests you. The Pacific Harp Institute exists to provide young harpists with the resources, learning environment and support necessary to pursue excellence in performing the harp. By doing so, we hope to make the harp more accessable to people of all ages as our young harpists, and their teachers/mentors, often perform for the general public. Part of our mission is also to raise public service awareness in our students by having them perform to help raise money for other not for profit organizations such as Make a Wish Foundation and local food banks, etc. We are in very real need of a treasurer on our board of directors who can support us with sound financial guidance and services. Our board meetings are the second Thursday evening of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 at the library in Redmond, WA. New Moon Farm is a non-profit animal rescue organization, specializing in goats. We have been in operation for 10 years, and have placed over 700 animals in loving homes. We received our 501(c)3 status this year, and need to learn more about what we can do in terms of finances and taxes. The Arc of King County is the oldest nonprofit organization serving children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families in the Greater Puget Sound area. They work with people with all forms of developmental disabilities, including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and intellectual disabilities. Pacific Northwest Diabetes Research Institute (PNDRI) is a non-profit research organization located in Seattle. We operate a medical research laboratory to support and conduct basic and clinical research that leads to the prevention an cure of Diabetes and its complications. The Groundbreakers’ Program is a community for the homeless, offering an opportunity to change lives with educational and work programs focused in sustainable and organic agriculture. The program aims to offer work skills, self-respect and a deep understanding of sustainability, which are fundamental to reintegration into society. It also offers local farmers hard to find seasonal labor, and makes organic produce available to low-income families, schools, and shelters. We are looking for a CPA with experience with non-profits to help us learn about how to take advantage of opportunities and benefits available to non-profits, plan our finances, and help with our books (as necessary). One Day's Wages is a non-profit organization based in Seattle that is working to raise funds and awareness to fight extreme global poverty. Our organization promotes awareness, invites giving, and supports sustainable relief through partnerships, especially with smaller organizations in developing regions. Our vision is to inspire people around the world to simply donate one day's wages and to renew that pledge monthly, quarterly or yearly on their birthdays to the cause of ending extreme global poverty. We are currently looking for someone who would be willing to perform an annual financial audit for our organization. We are a new and quickly growing organization, and we are hoping to begin the process of applying for financial grants to support our administrative budget. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) Aging & Disability Services Administration (ADSA) has an Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC) Expansion grant from the U.S. Administration on Aging (AoA). Our plan is to build/expand on our Senior Information & Assistance programs throughout the state to serve persons of all ages and economic backgrounds who are seeking information, understanding and assistance to access long term support options. The ADRCs will work with their partners to enhance the network of options and referral processes so that individuals can get to the right service(s) at the right time without getting lost between agencies or systems. As part of the grant, we are forming a statewide ADRC Planning and Policy Committee to advise ADSA on development of a 5-year business plan and budget for statewide ADRC expansion. A major function of ADRCs is to help persons of all economic backgrounds, including private pay, with planning for future long-term support needs, and connecting them private pay resources and information. We are looking for a volunteer CPA to bring experiential perspective and expertise on personal accounting options/resources, to be an integral part the planning process. ADSA is planning on 2 initial all-day meetings in May and June; and then possibly 3 more in September, November, and January until the plan is due to AoA in March 2011. The in-person meetings will probably be in the SeaTac area. A consulting firm, Berk and Associates will be assisting ADSA by contacting the committee members before the meetings begin to introduce themselves and learn about the members themselves.
