Disruptive Demographics: Implications for the U.S. Accounting Industry
The U.S. population changed dramatically—in size, composition, and distribution—during the first decade of the new millennium. Some of the changes were a continuation of late 20th century trends. Others were decade-specific, newly emergent trends. But, irrespective of timing and periodicity, the observed population shifts have drastically altered the social, economic, and political fabric of our nation. Learn about six of the most disruptive demographic trends and the challenges and opportunities they pose for the U.S. accounting industry.
About the Speaker
Jim Johnson is the William Rand Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School and director of the Urban Investment Strategies Center at the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise.
Johnson is an expert on community and economic development, the effects of demographic changes on the U.S. workplace, interethnic minority conflict in advanced industrial societies, urban poverty and public policy, and workforce diversity issues.
Johnson spent 12 years on the faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles, before coming to UNC-Chapel Hill. He received a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Central University, master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Ph.D. from Michigan State University.

The AICPA identified nearly 20 areas for which the IRS should provide additional guidance as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The letter covers important questions that taxpayers and practitioners are struggling with, such as whether same-sex married employees should amend Form 1040 to change the filing status if they request a FICA tax refund.
The AICPA has compiled resources on states conformity on DOMA filing issues for same-sex couples. Click here to access the DOMA-ruling resource page.
