March 6-12 is National Consumer Protection Week. Marketing has come a long way from the days of “Mad Men” and it is increasingly personalized. As a consumer it can be overwhelming and it comes at us from some so many sources. On the web, cookies ensure you will continue to see ads for items you recently viewed on other sites. I had a pair of shoes “following me” through a few websites the other day. They are cute but they became less appealing when they started to stalk me from website to website. When we go to the store, we are asked for our phone numbers and zip codes so we can be targeted for marketing. And of course, there are the junk mail and phones calls for products that their data thinks is a match for you. While you are swimming through all of this, you have to be on guard to protect yourself against identity theft and fraud.
The good news is you have some options to help reduce the marketing and protect yourself.
