Debra has been a Tax Accountant with HodgenLaw PC for over 15 years, focusing on expatriation planning projects and multi-year cleanup projects for tax returns. She graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and completed a Master of Science in Taxation degree at Golden Gate University in 2020.

In this session, you will learn how to help clients renounce US citizenship or terminate their green cards while minimizing exposure to IRC Section 877A exit tax. The focus will be on avoiding expatriation, avoiding covered expatriate status, or reducing/eliminating exit tax in situations where covered expatriate status cannot be avoided. There is also a section on common problem areas and some ways to approach those issues. You’ll leave this session understanding key thresholds, timing considerations, and practical approaches to help clients exit the US cleanly.

Tiffany Kawasaki

A CPA since 2010, Tiffany Kawasaki was introduced to accounting while working at a helicopter skiing company in Utah. She later worked at Deloitte and BDO Seidman while pursuing her master’s degree. She spent eight years a local accounting firm before starting Kawasaki Tax. She specializes in federal and international tax issues for the professional services, real estate, and high net worth industries. She also has a deep understanding of withholding and FATCA related issues. She is a member of the Washington Society of CPAs (WSCPA) and serves on the WSCPA International Tax Committee. She is an extension lecturer for the University of Washington in their Global Business Program. She has presented at a variety of events including the WSCPA International Tax Conference and for local organizations, such as the Washington Counsel of International Trade. She has also taught CPE on a variety of topics at local firms. Tiffany received her Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts from Brigham Young University and her Masters of Accountancy with an emphasis in Taxation from Gonzaga University.

Jake has been assisting clients to identify, understand and manage various international tax issues for over 15 years, including holding senior management roles in the Australian network firms of PwC, BDO and Baker Tilly International. After repatriating from Australia back to the US in 2016, Jake started his own firm, Optima Geo Business Advisors, where he advises clients on cross-border business tax issues, with a particular emphasis on transfer pricing matters. Jake commenced his professional accounting career in 2005 after obtaining his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Western Australia’s Curtin University. Jake went on to earn his master’s degree in international trade from Curtin University and qualify as an Australian Certified Practicing Accountant (‘CPA’ in Australia) in 2008, and later received his US CPA (AICPA) license from the State of Montana in 2017. Jake previously represented the State of Western Australia on CPA Australia’s Tax Center of Excellence committee from 2010 to 2014 and has had his work published in Thomson Reuters’ Asia Tax and Trade Bulletin. Intangible assets are now central to multinational business value, and recent policy changes have created significant incentives for businesses to centralise the ownership of intangible assets in the U.S.  At the same time, foreign tax authorities are increasing scrutiny of cross-border structuring and transfer pricing. This session will provide a high-level overview of key concepts and planning considerations, including: the nexus with ‘DEMPE’ and ‘risk control’ functions, available tax incentives, withholding and foreign tax credit implications, and emerging enforcement risks affecting both routine ownership and use arrangements as well as the potential pitfalls of migration and ‘mischaracterization’ assertions from tax authorities.
