Not-for-profit organizations often receive revenue from a variety of sources, and determining the appropriate accounting treatment isn’t always straightforward. This session will explore the application of ASC 606 and ASC 958 to common not-for-profit revenue streams, including how to distinguish exchange transactions from contributions and evaluate conditional and unconditional contributions. Through practical examples, attendees will examine key considerations for recognizing revenue appropriately and navigating agreements that may contain elements subject to different accounting guidance.

Federal funding requirements continue to evolve, creating new compliance considerations for not-for-profit organizations and their auditors. This session will provide a timely update on Single Audit requirements, Uniform Guidance, and federal grant compliance, including recent changes, current audit thresholds, common compliance challenges, and emerging areas of focus. Attendees will gain practical insights into what auditors and finance teams should be watching for and how organizations can strengthen compliance and stay prepared for their next Single Audit.

FASB’s lead staff member for the nonprofit sector will update us on recent and emerging developments from the FASB. The session will highlight key changes in accounting standards, clarify their practical implications, and help nonprofit financial professionals prepare for upcoming implementation deadlines and otherwise “stay ahead of the curve.”  We’ll leave time for Q&A, so please be sure to bring your questions!

Building an effective compensation strategy can be challenging without a big budget or dedicated compensation team. This session offers a practical roadmap built around three key questions: What should we pay? How do we know if we’re paying appropriately? And what can we do when we can’t simply pay more? Explore how to develop a compensation philosophy, use market data and benchmarking, prioritize limited resources, and strengthen your broader employee value proposition. Attendees will also consider when bonuses, benefits, and other rewards can support recruitment and retention, and when they may not be the right solution.

This session looks at three real fraud cases involving employees who stole from their organizations and hid it, in some cases for years. For each case, we will walk through what happened, how the fraud was uncovered, and how investigators traced the money to reconstruct the financial story. The session will translate lessons from actual investigations into practical considerations organizations can use to recognize vulnerabilities, strengthen safeguards, and reduce fraud risk.

AI is quickly becoming part of the nonprofit finance toolkit, but determining what is useful, safe, and simply hype can be challenging. This session cuts through the buzzwords with a plain-English overview of common AI concepts, including large language models, prompts, tokens, and agents. Attendees will see practical examples of how tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot can support everyday finance and administrative workflows, from drafting and summarizing to research and turning information into usable deliverables. The session will also address key considerations around licensing, data security, privacy, and selecting AI tools appropriate for sensitive organizational information.
