Role Summary
The Treasurer serves as an officer of the Board of Directors and provides strategic financial oversight to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization. Working closely with the Board Chair, CEO, and finance staff or contractors, the Treasurer helps the board fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities by monitoring AMS’s financial health, strengthening financial governance, and supporting informed decision-making. This is a governance and oversight role—not a bookkeeping or day-to-day accounting position.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with the CEO and finance staff or contracted accountant to provide strategic financial oversight and ensure the long-term financial health of AMS.
- Review, monitor and interpret monthly financial statements, cash flow, budget-to-actual reports, and financial forecasts, helping the Board understand key trends, opportunities, and risks.
- Present financial reports and recommendations during Board meetings.
- Support the development, review, and Board approval of the annual operating budget.
- Help ensure appropriate financial controls, policies, risk management practices, and operating reserves are maintained.
- Monitor compliance with nonprofit financial regulations, reporting requirements, and Board-approved financial policies.
- Review the organization’s annual Form 990, audit, or financial review before Board approval and filing, as applicable.
- Serve as Chair of the Finance Committee (or actively participate as a committee member if another chair is appointed).
- Provide financial guidance on grants, restricted funding, strategic initiatives, and long-term financial planning.
Qualifications
- Professional experience in finance, accounting, banking, business, investment management, or nonprofit financial management. CPA, CFA, MBA, or other relevant financial credentials are welcomed but not required.
- Experience reviewing and interpreting financial statements, budgets, and financial reports.
- Strategic thinker with sound judgment and the ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial audiences.
- Strong commitment to ethical stewardship, transparency, and accountability.
- Passion for the mission of the Adoptee Mentoring Society and a commitment to supporting adoptee-led leadership.
- Previous nonprofit board or Finance Committee experience is preferred, but not required.
Board Member Expectations
- Attend and actively participate in monthly Board meetings.
- Serve on at least one Board committee.
- Review meeting materials and financial reports in advance of meetings.
- Uphold the Board’s Give/Get Policy by making a personally meaningful annual contribution and helping generate or secure at least $3,000 annually through a combination of personal giving and fundraising support.
- Uphold the fiduciary duties of care, loyalty, and obedience.
- Maintain confidentiality and disclose any actual or potential conflicts of interest.
- Support the mission, values, and ethical governance of the Adoptee Mentoring Society.
