The treasurer of a nonprofit organization acts as the financial officer of the board, overseeing financial management, budgeting, reporting, and regulatory compliance to ensure the group remains fiscally healthy and transparent.
Core Financial Oversight · Review monthly and quarterly financial statements for accuracy, reconcile bank accounts and financial statements, which they present at board meetings. · Monitor cash flow and spot money problems early · Track restricted funds and donations correctly · Lead the board’s finance committee · Regularly attends board meetings and important related meetings. · Make a serious commitment to participate actively in committee work such as fundraising.
Budgeting and Planning · Help staff create the annual budget · Present budget recommendations to the full board · Compare actual spending and income against projections · Advise on the financial impact of new programs
Compliance and Audits · Ensure timely filing of annual tax forms like the IRS Form 990 · Serve as the main board contact for external financial audits, review the annual audit and answer board members and Executive Director’s questions. · Help build and maintain internal controls to prevent fraud · Oversee investment policies and reserve funds if applicable
Assists the Executive Director and Board Chair (President) in preparing the annual budget and presenting it to the board for approval.
