Katherine Virden, CPA, is a Senior Manager in the Audit & Assurance practice at Clark Nuber. A graduate of Gonzaga University, Kat started her public accounting career with Clark Nuber in 2018 and has since developed a strong passion for serving not for profit organizations. Her work focuses on providing high quality audit and assurance services while helping nonprofit clients navigate complex accounting and compliance matters. Kat’s clients include a variety of not for profit organizations across the region. In her free time, she enjoys watching Premier League soccer, traveling with her family, and skiing.

Craig Coogan, Executive Director

Craig Coogan

For 35 years Craig Coogan has led mission-based nonprofits. Prior to joining the Seattle Men’s Chorus & Seattle Women’s Chorus he served as Executive Director from 2012-2022 of Boston Gay Men’s Chorus. He is an expert in developing strategies and programs to help LGBTQA+ and other nonprofit organizations achieve their operational and artistic goals. A graduate of Syracuse University, he brings experience in both the for-profit and non-profit arenas. Craig previously served as Executive Director for One Voice Mixed Chorus in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was a founding board member and treasurer for ten years of the acclaimed women’s choral group Vox Femina Los Angeles. He has also produced independent films, award-winning documentaries, and acclaimed original plays that tell the LGBTQA experience.

Kimberly Scott, CAE, President & CEO, Washington Society of CPAs

Kimberly Scott

Kimberly Scott, CAE, brings over two decades of dedicated leadership to her role of President & CEO of the WSCPA, a position she has held since 2017. Her commitment to advancing the CPA profession is evident in her extensive advocacy work at both state and national levels.

Since joining the WSCPA in 2000, she has served in various senior leadership roles throughout the organization. From 2009 to 2022, she also served as Executive Director of the Washington CPA Foundation. In the role of WSCPA’s Vice President of Government and Member Relations, Kimberly spearheaded the organization’s advocacy efforts, successfully driving the drafting and passage of multiple bills through the Washington State legislature, including a bill that secured $3.3 million for the Washington CPA Foundation. The Foundation now provides over $500,000 in accounting scholarships annually.

Beyond her role at WSCPA, Kimberly is involved in shaping the future of the accounting profession. She recently served on the AICPA National Pipeline Advisory Group and the AICPA Women’s Initiatives Executive Committee.

A Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential holder, Kimberly is passionate about continuous learning. She has graduated from programs with Heroic Speaking, Leadership Eastside, and earned her certificate for DEI in the Workplace from the University of South Florida.

She has volunteered her time and expertise on various boards, including recently serving on the Washington Society for Association Excellence (WSAE) DEI Task Force, the Homeward Pet Board of Directors, and the Human Services Commission for her city.

Nonprofit success depends on more than individual expertise. It requires leaders, staff, boards, advisors, and community partners to understand how their roles connect in service of a shared mission. Michaela Kay

Michaela Kay, CPA, has more than 15 years of professional accounting experience, providing audit and tax services to the Greater Seattle area. Currently, she serves as the practice leader for the BDO Seattle office’s Government and Nonprofit practices.

Michaela is able to bring a unique perspective to her clients as she spent two years working for World Vision as a lead senior accountant. This experience provides her with the ability to understand and relate to her clients on a practical level, including performing financial statement audits, internal control testing, single audits, program specific audits, and preparation of Form 990, while also being able to provide them with a superior client experience.

One of Michaela’s strongest attributes and biggest value adds for her clients is her ability and desire to assist with complex audit or accounting challenges. Relying on her foundational commitment to build robust relationships with her clients and getting to know their business on an intimate level, she is able to be proactive in identifying business challenges and working with her clients to find a solution.

Michaela is one of BDO’s Audit Quality Directors (AQD). As an AQD, Michaela is actively involved in staff training and the other quality control measures. In addition to internal training at BDO, she regularly teaches courses on single audits and other nonprofit accounting and auditing topics for the WSCPA and Thompson Grants.

In her free time, Michaela spends time with her husband, two daughters, and two dogs. We love to do bake and do crafts and I also enjoy relaxing with a good book.

Veronica Cook, CPA, BDO USA LLP

Veronica Cook

Veronica is an audit director who has worked for more than 12 years in public accounting. She provides audit services to various nonprofit clients with valuable experience in financial statement audits and Single Audits. She leads the local office’s Single Audit niche and is a member of the firm’s Nonprofit team. 

Veronica also leads her office’s core value team, enhancing employee satisfaction and well-being through various appreciation initiatives. She is actively involved in staff training and other quality control measures. In addition to internal training at BDO, she regularly teaches external courses on Single Audits and other nonprofit accounting and auditing topics. She serves as the treasurer for Team Read.

Not-for-profit organizations often receive revenue from a variety of sources, and determining the appropriate accounting treatment isn’t always straightforward. This session will explore the application of ASC 606 and ASC 958 to common not-for-profit revenue streams, including how to distinguish exchange transactions from contributions and evaluate conditional and unconditional contributions. Through practical examples, attendees will examine key considerations for recognizing revenue appropriately and navigating agreements that may contain elements subject to different accounting guidance.

Troy Rector, CPA, CGMA, is a shareholder in Clark Nuber’s Public Sector Group, where he has dedicated his career to serving tax exempt organizations. Troy works with governmental entities and not-for-profit organizations to understand their unique issues, enabling him to provide technical advice that is both specific to their organization and also clear and concise. He has spent his career providing audit advisory services to governmental organizations, including those administering Federal funds. Troy regularly speaks at conferences, including the National Grant Management Association’s Annual Grants Conference and the AICPA National Governmental Not-For Profit Program and AICPA National Not-For Profit Conference. Troy resides in Edmonds, Washington with his wife and identical twin, UW Husky daughters.

Kelly Rancourt, CPA, Audit Principal, Clark Nuber PS

Kelly Rancourt

Winner of a WSCPA Outstanding Volunteer Leader Award. Kelly Rancourt, CPA, is a Principal in Clark Nuber’s Audit and Assurance Services Group. Kelly has over 15 years of experience performing audits for not-for-profit and healthcare organizations. She also performs federal compliance audits. She is a co-author of the annual Knowledge Based Audits of Health Care Entities published by CCH, a Wolters Kluwer Company. She is a member of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), and the WSCPA. She is also a member of the AICPA Not-for-Profit Audit Risk Alert Subcommittee. She speaks locally and nationally on Not-for-Profit and Healthcare accounting topics, as wells as federal grant compliance.

Federal funding requirements continue to evolve, creating new compliance considerations for not-for-profit organizations and their auditors. This session will provide a timely update on Single Audit requirements, Uniform Guidance, and federal grant compliance, including recent changes, current audit thresholds, common compliance challenges, and emerging areas of focus. Attendees will gain practical insights into what auditors and finance teams should be watching for and how organizations can strengthen compliance and stay prepared for their next Single Audit.

Andrea McGuire, CPA, has a diverse background in accounting, finance, and operations across both nonprofit and private sector organizations. She currently serves as the Director of Investment Portfolio Accounting and Tax Compliance at Casey Family Programs, where she previously held the role of Manager of Financial Accounting.

Before joining Casey Family Programs, Andrea was the Controller for Truck Sales & FP&A at Western Peterbilt. Prior to that, she held multiple roles at Clark Nuber PS, including Audit Manager, Senior Auditor, and Audit In-Charge Associate.

Andrea also served as the Manager of Finance and Operations at VillageReach and began her career at Axiom Certified Public Accountants and Business Advisors LLC, where she progressed from Staff Intern to Staff Accountant.

Rebekah Stanley

Rebekah has over 14 years of experience providing tax compliance and consulting services to a variety of nonprofit organizations (including 501(c)(3) and (c)(4) organizations), high net worth individuals, family offices, and others in their philanthropic endeavors. She has extensive experience consulting with her clients on philanthropic structuring, program activities, shared services, international grant-making and investment analysis.

Prior to joining Deloitte, Rebekah worked at a family office, managing the tax aspects of philanthropic giving, including contracts and grants review, and tax compliance for the philanthropic organizations.

Rebekah is a member of Deloitte’s Global Center for Excellence in Philanthropy. She holds a JD from Seattle University School of Law, as well as a BS and Masters in Accounting from Montana State University. She is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the AICPA and Washington State Bar Association.

Tricia Smith

Tricia Smith, MS, is the founder of The Jule Group®, a Greater Seattle advisory firm focused on mission-first AI leadership for nonprofits. A former nonprofit Executive Director, she brings 20 years of experience in organizational development, talent strategy, and operations to the decisions leaders face as AI changes the work.

Her work helps nonprofit executives and the finance professionals who advise them build practical approaches to AI governance, data security, internal controls, workforce planning, and responsible adoption. She translates fast-moving technology into decisions boards and staff can use, with particular attention to capacity, audit readiness, and the realities of smaller organizations. Tricia has delivered CPE-eligible training for accounting professionals on AI security, data classification, and workflow applications in nonprofit finance.

Tricia holds a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Eastern Washington University.

AI is already changing how nonprofits operate, shifting the conversation from whether to use it to how to adopt it responsibly. This session will explore practical applications of AI in nonprofit finance and operations, including live tool demonstrations, while addressing key governance and risk considerations such as data security, internal controls, audit readiness, and board accountability. Ryan Herzog

Professor Herzog is an Associate Professor of Economics at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. He was born in Tacoma, Washington and grew up in Gig Harbor, Washington. He attended Pacific Lutheran University and graduated with a B.A. in Economics with minors in Mathematics and Business. After a brief stint at Russell/Mellon (Russell Investment) he went on to graduate school at the University of Oregon. He completed his doctorate in 2009 with a focus in International Capital Mobility, Econometrics, and International Finance. Professor Herzog’s academic interests include international capital flows, monetary policy, and regional business cycles. At Gonzaga he has served on a number of committees including faculty compensation (chair), retirement benefits, and university assessment (chair). He is a member of the Audit Committee at Numerica Credit Union.

Jeffrey Mechanick, MBA, FASB Senior Project Advisor, Financial Accounting Standards Board

Jeffrey Mechanick

Jeff Mechanick is Senior Project Advisor for Not-for-Profit Organizations at the FASB. In that role, he provides organization-wide technical and strategic advice on standard-setting activities affecting the not-for-profit sector, guides and facilitates stakeholder outreach with the sector, chairs the FASB’s Not-for-Profit Advisory Committee, and participates in some of the FASB’s broader educational activities. He is also a member of the Technical Advisory Group of the International Financial Reporting for Nonprofit Organizations initiative (#IFR4NPO).

Prior to joining the FASB staff in 2006, Jeff spent 20 years working in and with the not-for-profit sector, as the CFO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., and before that, as a Senior Manager with KPMG, LLP, in the firm’s New York office. From 1992 to 1994, he served as the National Technical Senior Manager for the firm’s Higher Education, Research, and Other Not-for-Profit Organizations (HERON) practice. He is also a past member of the AICPA’s NFP Expert Panel. Jeff received his MBA from Rutgers University and his AB from the University of Chicago, and he is a member of the AICPA and the New York State Society of CPAs. He is also an adjunct instructor in Columbia University’s MS degree program in Nonprofit Management.

FASB’s lead staff member for the nonprofit sector will update us on recent and emerging developments from the FASB. The session will highlight key changes in accounting standards, clarify their practical implications, and help nonprofit financial professionals prepare for upcoming implementation deadlines and otherwise “stay ahead of the curve.”  We’ll leave time for Q&A, so please be sure to bring your questions!

AI is quickly becoming part of the nonprofit finance toolkit, but determining what is useful, safe, and simply hype can be challenging. This session cuts through the buzzwords with a plain-English overview of common AI concepts, including large language models, prompts, tokens, and agents. Attendees will see practical examples of how tools such as Microsoft 365 Copilot can support everyday finance and administrative workflows, from drafting and summarizing to research and turning information into usable deliverables. Jen Mueller, Talk Sporty To Me

Jen Mueller

Jen Mueller is an Emmy award-winning producer and sports broadcaster based in Seattle. A 25-year sports broadcasting veteran with two Super Bowl rings, she currently serves as the Seattle Seahawks radio sideline reporter and spent 19 years as part of the Seattle Mariners television broadcast team on ROOT SPORTS. She was honored for her work in the industry in 2022 as the recipient of the Keith Jackson Media Excellence Award presented by the Seattle Sports Commission. In 2025, she was named a Woman to Watch by 425 Magazine and South Sound Magazine.

In addition to her work on the sidelines, Jen is an established business communication expert and the founder of Talk Sporty to Me. She’s published 3 books that outline her approach to conversations and effective communication. She’s also the executive producer, host, and creator of “I Cook, You Measure,” a hit internet cooking show.

Connected teams perform better, communicate better and produce better results - just look at the 2025 Seattle Seahawks. Jen Mueller was on the sidelines for every game and calls it one of the most connected teams she has covered in 25 years in professional sports. 

In this keynote, Jen shares what leaders can learn from championship-caliber teams about navigating challenges together. Before joining Casey Family Programs, Andrea was the Controller for Truck Sales & FP&A at Western Peterbilt. Prior to that, she held multiple roles at Clark Nuber PS, including Audit Manager, Senior Auditor, and Audit In-Charge Associate.

Andrea also served as the Manager of Finance and Operations at VillageReach and began her career at Axiom Certified Public Accountants and Business Advisors LLC, where she progressed from Staff Intern to Staff Accountant.

Brandi is the Director of Career Pathways at Degrees of Change, leading the organization’s college-to-career work, including the Strickland Fellowship and Seed Internships, while also developing partnerships with employers and supporting students through career exploration and professional development. She brings more than a decade of experience in education and career development, including teaching high school and leading career programs at Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Washington - Seattle. Craig Coogan, Executive Director

For 35 years Craig Coogan has led mission-based nonprofits. Prior to joining the Seattle Men’s Chorus & Seattle Women’s Chorus he served as Executive Director from 2012-2022 of Boston Gay Men’s Chorus. He is an expert in developing strategies and programs to help LGBTQA+ and other nonprofit organizations achieve their operational and artistic goals. A graduate of Syracuse University, he brings experience in both the for-profit and non-profit arenas. Craig previously served as Executive Director for One Voice Mixed Chorus in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was a founding board member and treasurer for ten years of the acclaimed women’s choral group Vox Femina Los Angeles. He has also produced independent films, award-winning documentaries, and acclaimed original plays that tell the LGBTQA experience.

Jeffrey Mechanick, MBA, FASB Senior Project Advisor, Financial Accounting Standards Board

Jeff Mechanick is Senior Project Advisor for Not-for-Profit Organizations at the FASB. In that role, he provides organization-wide technical and strategic advice on standard-setting activities affecting the not-for-profit sector, guides and facilitates stakeholder outreach with the sector, chairs the FASB’s Not-for-Profit Advisory Committee, and participates in some of the FASB’s broader educational activities. He is also a member of the Technical Advisory Group of the International Financial Reporting for Nonprofit Organizations initiative (#IFR4NPO).

Prior to joining the FASB staff in 2006, Jeff spent 20 years working in and with the not-for-profit sector, as the CFO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., and before that, as a Senior Manager with KPMG, LLP, in the firm’s New York office. From 1992 to 1994, he served as the National Technical Senior Manager for the firm’s Higher Education, Research, and Other Not-for-Profit Organizations (HERON) practice. He is also a past member of the AICPA’s NFP Expert Panel. Jeff received his MBA from Rutgers University and his AB from the University of Chicago, and he is a member of the AICPA and the New York State Society of CPAs. He is also an adjunct instructor in Columbia University’s MS degree program in Nonprofit Management.

Jen Mueller, Talk Sporty To Me

Jen Mueller is an Emmy award-winning producer and sports broadcaster based in Seattle. A 25-year sports broadcasting veteran with two Super Bowl rings, she currently serves as the Seattle Seahawks radio sideline reporter and spent 19 years as part of the Seattle Mariners television broadcast team on ROOT SPORTS. She was honored for her work in the industry in 2022 as the recipient of the Keith Jackson Media Excellence Award presented by the Seattle Sports Commission. In 2025, she was named a Woman to Watch by 425 Magazine and South Sound Magazine.

In addition to her work on the sidelines, Jen is an established business communication expert and the founder of Talk Sporty to Me. She’s published 3 books that outline her approach to conversations and effective communication. She’s also the executive producer, host, and creator of “I Cook, You Measure,” a hit internet cooking show.

Katherine Virden, CPA, Audit Senior Manager, Clark Nuber PS

Katherine Virden, CPA, is a Senior Manager in the Audit & Assurance practice at Clark Nuber. A graduate of Gonzaga University, Kat started her public accounting career with Clark Nuber in 2018 and has since developed a strong passion for serving not for profit organizations. Her work focuses on providing high quality audit and assurance services while helping nonprofit clients navigate complex accounting and compliance matters. Kat’s clients include a variety of not for profit organizations across the region. In her free time, she enjoys watching Premier League soccer, traveling with her family, and skiing.

Kelly Rancourt, CPA, Audit Principal, Clark Nuber PS

Winner of a WSCPA Outstanding Volunteer Leader Award. Kelly Rancourt, CPA, is a Principal in Clark Nuber’s Audit and Assurance Services Group. Kelly has over 15 years of experience performing audits for not-for-profit and healthcare organizations. She also performs federal compliance audits. She is a co-author of the annual Knowledge Based Audits of Health Care Entities published by CCH, a Wolters Kluwer Company. She is a member of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), and the WSCPA. She is also a member of the AICPA Not-for-Profit Audit Risk Alert Subcommittee. She speaks locally and nationally on Not-for-Profit and Healthcare accounting topics, as wells as federal grant compliance.

Kimberly Scott, CAE, President & CEO, Washington Society of CPAs

Kimberly Scott, CAE, brings over two decades of dedicated leadership to her role of President & CEO of the WSCPA, a position she has held since 2017. Her commitment to advancing the CPA profession is evident in her extensive advocacy work at both state and national levels.

Since joining the WSCPA in 2000, she has served in various senior leadership roles throughout the organization. From 2009 to 2022, she also served as Executive Director of the Washington CPA Foundation. In the role of WSCPA’s Vice President of Government and Member Relations, Kimberly spearheaded the organization’s advocacy efforts, successfully driving the drafting and passage of multiple bills through the Washington State legislature, including a bill that secured $3.3 million for the Washington CPA Foundation. The Foundation now provides over $500,000 in accounting scholarships annually.

Beyond her role at WSCPA, Kimberly is involved in shaping the future of the accounting profession. She recently served on the AICPA National Pipeline Advisory Group and the AICPA Women’s Initiatives Executive Committee.

A Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential holder, Kimberly is passionate about continuous learning. She has graduated from programs with Heroic Speaking, Leadership Eastside, and earned her certificate for DEI in the Workplace from the University of South Florida.

She has volunteered her time and expertise on various boards, including recently serving on the Washington Society for Association Excellence (WSAE) DEI Task Force, the Homeward Pet Board of Directors, and the Human Services Commission for her city.

Michaela Kay, CPA, Partner, BDO USA LLP

Michaela Kay, CPA, has more than 15 years of professional accounting experience, providing audit and tax services to the Greater Seattle area. Currently, she serves as the practice leader for the BDO Seattle office’s Government and Nonprofit practices.

Michaela is able to bring a unique perspective to her clients as she spent two years working for World Vision as a lead senior accountant. This experience provides her with the ability to understand and relate to her clients on a practical level, including performing financial statement audits, internal control testing, single audits, program specific audits, and preparation of Form 990, while also being able to provide them with a superior client experience.

One of Michaela’s strongest attributes and biggest value adds for her clients is her ability and desire to assist with complex audit or accounting challenges. Relying on her foundational commitment to build robust relationships with her clients and getting to know their business on an intimate level, she is able to be proactive in identifying business challenges and working with her clients to find a solution.

Michaela is one of BDO’s Audit Quality Directors (AQD). As an AQD, Michaela is actively involved in staff training and the other quality control measures. Rebekah Stanley, CPA,JD, Tax Senior Manager, Deloitte LLP (Seattle)

Rebekah has over 14 years of experience providing tax compliance and consulting services to a variety of nonprofit organizations (including 501(c)(3) and (c)(4) organizations), high net worth individuals, family offices, and others in their philanthropic endeavors. She has extensive experience consulting with her clients on philanthropic structuring, program activities, shared services, international grant-making and investment analysis.

Prior to joining Deloitte, Rebekah worked at a family office, managing the tax aspects of philanthropic giving, including contracts and grants review, and tax compliance for the philanthropic organizations.

Rebekah is a member of Deloitte’s Global Center for Excellence in Philanthropy. She holds a JD from Seattle University School of Law, as well as a BS and Masters in Accounting from Montana State University. She is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the AICPA and Washington State Bar Association.

Ryan Herzog, Ph.D., School of Bus. Admin., Program Coord.

Professor Herzog is an Associate Professor of Economics at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. He was born in Tacoma, Washington and grew up in Gig Harbor, Washington. He attended Pacific Lutheran University and graduated with a B.A. in Economics with minors in Mathematics and Business. After a brief stint at Russell/Mellon (Russell Investment) he went on to graduate school at the University of Oregon. He completed his doctorate in 2009 with a focus in International Capital Mobility, Econometrics, and International Finance. Professor Herzog’s academic interests include international capital flows, monetary policy, and regional business cycles. At Gonzaga he has served on a number of committees including faculty compensation (chair), retirement benefits, and university assessment (chair). He is a member of the Audit Committee at Numerica Credit Union.

Tricia Smith, MS, SHRM-CP

Tricia Smith, MS, is the founder of The Jule Group®, a Greater Seattle advisory firm focused on mission-first AI leadership for nonprofits. A former nonprofit Executive Director, she brings 20 years of experience in organizational development, talent strategy, and operations to the decisions leaders face as AI changes the work.

Her work helps nonprofit executives and the finance professionals who advise them build practical approaches to AI governance, data security, internal controls, workforce planning, and responsible adoption. She translates fast-moving technology into decisions boards and staff can use, with particular attention to capacity, audit readiness, and the realities of smaller organizations. Tricia has delivered CPE-eligible training for accounting professionals on AI security, data classification, and workflow applications in nonprofit finance.

Troy Rector, CPA, Shareholder, Clark Nuber PS

Troy Rector, CPA, CGMA, is a shareholder in Clark Nuber’s Public Sector Group, where he has dedicated his career to serving tax exempt organizations. Troy works with governmental entities and not-for-profit organizations to understand their unique issues, enabling him to provide technical advice that is both specific to their organization and also clear and concise. He has spent his career providing audit advisory services to governmental organizations, including those administering Federal funds. Troy regularly speaks at conferences, including the National Grant Management Association’s Annual Grants Conference and the AICPA National Governmental Not-For Profit Program and AICPA National Not-For Profit Conference. Troy resides in Edmonds, Washington with his wife and identical twin, UW Husky daughters.

Veronica is an audit director who has worked for more than 12 years in public accounting. She provides audit services to various nonprofit clients with valuable experience in financial statement audits and Single Audits. She leads the local office’s Single Audit niche and is a member of the firm’s Nonprofit team. 

Veronica also leads her office’s core value team, enhancing employee satisfaction and well-being through various appreciation initiatives.
