Henry Benson, former chair of the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants Board of Directors, passed away on July 3, 2016, with his wife by his side at the age of 97. Henry was the WSCPA's 44th board chair, serving from 1963 to 1964. Prior to his death, he was the WSCPA's longest-surviving past board chair.

The Internal Revenue Service today issued a warning to taxpayers about bogus phone calls from IRS impersonators demanding payment for a non-existent tax, the “Federal Student Tax.” Even though the tax deadline has come and gone, scammers continue to use varied strategies to trick people, in this case students. In this newest twist, they try to convince people to wire money immediately to the scammer.

The number of firms in merger and acquisition (M&A) conversations is growing at an accelerated pace with no signs of slowing. In fact, the AICPA predicts that in less than 10 years, 75 percent of all current accounting firm partners will be retired. Succession planning and the quest for market share growth are two of several factors that are fueling the M&A momentum. Those interested in being a successor may see more overall competition than imagined, and more of an analytical type of competition as well.
